Cosmos strategy seems to be to play for a point

SuperSport United could not break down the resolute Jomo Cosmos defence on Wednesday night‚ settling for a disappointing goalless draw despite coming into this Absa Premier League encounter as favourites.

While this was certainly a frustrating outcome in front of their home crowd for SuperSport‚ the visitors Cosmos‚ however‚ earned a precious point and are yet to suffer defeat in their return to top flight.

Ezenkosi nearly came close to a smash-and-grab having improved their style of play in the second half following a conservative approach in the first.

They also have their goalkeeper Sherywn Naicker to thank for keeping them in the match with a stunning save in the 86th minute when striker Jeremy Brockie was sure he’d found the back of the net.

With the clock winding down and the home side desperate to break the deadlock and take the maximum points‚ Cosmos left keeper Naicker exposed and faced with deadly forward Brockie.

But the man from New Zealand‚ who’s recently become the go-to man for goals at the club‚ watched in disbelief as Naicker kept the ball out with his feet.

SuperSport have now failed to keep what had looked like a satisfactory start going following a win against Orlando Pirates in their league opener and a come-from-behind stalemate away to Mpumalanga Black Aces.

Here on Wednesday night‚ Cosmos were just too tight at the back.

It appears to be a strategy now for coach Jomo Sono to play for a point‚ at least in these opening games as this is now his club’s third successive goalless draw since their promotion in June.

But they aren’t hopeless going forward either‚ as minimal as that might be‚ and this was evidence with attempts from captain Frederick Nsabiyumva as well as striker Nkanyiso Madonsela‚ who both came close with their efforts.
