Siyabonga Siyo overcame a stomach ailment to produce a brilliant show to claim the vacant WBA international mini-flyweight belt at East London's Orient Theatre at the weekend.

Promoter Andile Sidinile had reached the conclusion that Siyo's bout against Filipino Lito Dante would not happen after Siyo had not slept on Wednesday because of a stomach ailment.

The tiny fighter from Duncan Village still looked weak at the official weigh-in on Thursday and it was then that Sidinile voiced his concerns about Siyo.

But the promoter was advised to give the boxer until the next morning to see if there was no recovery. But it was made clear that the doctor would have to examine him before any decision was taken.

Siyo recovered well and looked fresh in outsmarting the aggressive Dante over 12 rounds. The scores were 115-113, 119-111 and 118-110 for Siyo, who remained undefeated after nine bouts, while Dante suffered his fifth defeat in 17 bouts.

Later, Mzuvukile Magwaca won the same organisation's bantamweight title when he beat Jose Gonzalez from Mexico on points.

Former SA and IBO intercontinental light flyweight champion Luzuko Siyo stopped Mfundo Gwayana in the seventh round of an exciting non-title flyweight bout.

Former Olympian Simphiwe Lusizi stopped Bongani Ngceshe in one minute.

Promising female star Leighandre "Baby Lee" Jegels produced an astonishing performance to stop Argentina's Mariana Gisele Clausi a minute and 47 seconds into the eighth round.

Anton Nel stopped Donovan Luff in two rounds to retain his national heavyweight belt, while Fikile Mlonyeni, Welcome Ntshingila, Barend van Rooyen, Stone van Aswegen and Emmeny Kolombo won their bouts against Bantu Makiwane, Xolani Mvubu, Elvis Ndlovu, Khumbulani Mdletshe and Gart Noot respectively.
