Sono pokes fun at Pitso and Cosmos

JOMO Sono poked fun at himself and at Pitso Mosimane; had a scathing put down for agents and suggested he had already seen two teams worse than his own in the Absa Premiership this season.

JOMO Sono poked fun at himself and at Pitso Mosimane; had a scathing put down for agents and suggested he had already seen two teams worse than his own in the Absa Premiership this season.

And all of this after just one game back in the top flight.

Ezenkosi owner-coach Sono made his return to the Premiership on Monday and was delighted to secure a point away at Maritzburg United.

Sono said his days of being excited about playing in the PSL were "long gone" but mocked himself over the number of times the team has yo-yoed in and out of the top flight.

"In the history books there is one team in the world that has gone down three times and one team in the world has come back three times ... which is Jomo Cosmos. So it's history," Sono said.

To be factually correct, Ezenkosi have actually been up and down four times.

Sono also entered the debate over the awarding of the man-of-the-match accolade to Masibusane Zongo of Platinum Stars on Saturday after he pulled off several party tricks in the goalless draw against Mamelodi Sundowns.

Mosimane criticised the judges as he felt the player had actually contributed little to the game.

"I think he's a super talent," Sono said about Zongo. "If he gets his head right he could be the best player in the country. Pitso says in Europe what he does wouldn't cut it. But this is not Europe. Let the boy play," Sono said.

Explaining the absence of his captain Thabang Monare on Monday, Sono confirmed that the player had been put on transfer.

"He still has a year and an option on his contract but as you know, once a player appears twice, thrice on TV, he gets agents. Those agents can't even lace their own boots but want to come and negotiate. I refused. I said he has a contract; there is no need to negotiate."

As to his own team's chances of again avoiding the drop this season, Sono added: "I have seen numbers 16 and 15 [on the log standings] play. So I think we are safe."
