A coach with the midas touch

Thokozile Khumalo doesn't stop thanking Farouk Khan for what he has done for her son.

Khumalo is indebted to Khan for opening the doors for her son, Bafana Bafana and SuperSport United defender Sibusiso Khumalo, to play in the professional ranks.

Sowetan listened to one of the messages that Khumalo left on Khan's phone, appreciating the shrewd development coach's efforts to ensure that his now famous son fulfilled his dream.

"Farouk, thank you very much for what you have done for Sibusiso, for the family," Khumalo said in the message.

"I always think about you whenever I see Sibusiso in action on TV. Today he's playing for Bafana Bafana because of all your efforts at the academy. God bless you and I will always be indebted to you."

There was a tone of encouragement in Khan's voice after listening to the message.

"These are messages that keep me inspired. MaKhumalo always calls to say 'thank you', and I really appreciate that. I'm also indebted to her for giving us a player like Sibusiso."

Sibusiso shared his mother's sentiments.

"Coach Khan was always there for me, and when things did not work for me he told me not to lose hope, I listened to him," he said.

"Today I'm a professional player and able to provide for my family. My father passed away and my mother is still working as a domestic worker. But I ensure that my family doesn't sleep with empty stomachs. My mother did a lot for me. She is my inspiration."

The Bafana star also renovated their Ilanda home in KwaZulu-Natal..

The 25-year-old recalled how he nearly quit football after then Mamelodi Sundowns coach Johan Neeskens told him he was not a "genuine" left-back. "But Khan was there to inspire me," he said.
