Not true, Danie Venter has not quit after all

World Boxing Federation cruiserweight champion Danie Venter has not quit boxing as it was suggested and will return to the ring before the end of the month.

Promoter Andre Thysse yesterday took steps to clear up the confusion and insisted the boxer will actually headline a boxing bill in a fight against Unathi Jacobs in Lynwood, Pretoria, on July 29.

"'I can confirm to you that Danie will headline my bill at Presleys," Thysse steadfastly maintained yesterday.

Venter has been the subject of much debate over the past few months and rumours suggested he had quit the sport in a huff after he was blown away by Oleksandr Usyk in Russia seven months ago.

The left-handed Russian proved that his gold medal triumph at the 2012 London Olympic Games was no flash in the pan when he stopped Venter in nine rounds and also gave a glimpse of his growing confidence in the ring.

Thysse said they had put the defeat to Usyk behind them and that plans were being made to shepherd Venter back to the career path that was originally mapped out for him.

''A win [against Unathi Jacobs] could put Danie in line for a fight with Pole Mateusz Masternak in Germany," the promoter said.

In the other fights on the bill, Thysse has added his highly-rated junior lightweight charge Sibusiso Zingange who will take on Vusumzi Manyoni over six rounds.

There will be four heavyweight bouts on the undercard that will feature Flo Simba, Ruan Visser, John Westerveld and Herman Potgieter.

Simba will take on Justice Siliga, while Visser is pitted against George Tshimanga. Westerveld will fight Matthew Benjamin, and Potgieter will collide with Bevan Beckman.
