Roggert Nyundu, who wants out of his R5000 a month contract at Polokwane City, will know his fate next week if the South African Football Players' Union (Safpu) has its way.

The union has sent an urgent request to the Premier Soccer League to view the controversial contract between Nyundu and the Limpopo-based club, confident that it can free the striker from the shackles of a club that is underpaying him.

City chairman Johnny Mogaladi has asked Nyundu to return to the club following a six-month loan spell with National First Division side Black Leopards last season. The player claims he is a free agent while Mogaladi is adamant he has one more year left with the club.

"We believe we have a winnable case but are waiting for a copy of the contract on Tuesday," said Safpu general secretary Thulaganyo Gaoshubelwe yesterday.

"You can't work and not have a copy of your basic conditions of employment and without anyone knowing how much you earn.

"We've written two letters to Polokwane City and made sure the chairman is aware of our efforts to communicate but we have still not received any response."

Sowetan broke the story about Nyundu's shocking salary a fortnight ago.

Safpu has proposed to the PSL that players should have a minium wage of R15000 but this is yet to be formalised.

"The reported R5000 that Nyundu is earning is slave labour," Gaoshubelwe said.

"We feel we are well-informed as far as the details of this case are concerned after speaking to the player.

"At times, players sign contracts without being aware of the finer details. As soon as we get our hands on the contract, we will know what steps to take."
