Cash-strapped Zimbabwean PSL players in limbo over call-up

Anthony Laffor of Mamelodi Sundowns is set for an international comeback‚ but his Zimbabwean clubmates have still to hear whether they are needed for African Nations Cup duty this weekend.

Cash-strapped Zimbabwe had not named a squad for their match in Malawi by the end of the weekend with local media reports on Sunday suggesting coach Calistus Pasuwa was about to quit after having not been paid.

Previous Zimbabwe coach Ian Gorowa is currently in a legal battle to get his money out of the bankrupt football association.

It means the likes of Khama Billiat and Cuthbert Malajila‚ plus the Kaizer Chiefs pair of Willard Katsande and Matthew Rusike‚ Kingston Nkhatha of SuperSport United and others at Premier Soccer League clubs are waiting to hear if they are needed.

Laffor had told Liberia some 18 months ago he had retired from international football but has had a change of heart and is in the squad for this coming Sunday’s qualifier away against Togo.

There he will come up against his former Sundowns teammate Dove Wome (now at SuperSport United) plus Sadate Ouro-Akoriko of relegated AmaZulu and Camaldine Abrew of Free State Stars.

Zambia left Kennedy Mweene and Davies Nkausu out of their squad for a warm-up friendly in Ethiopia on Wednesday but did take along Mukuka Mulenga‚ who spent last season on loan at Bloemfontein Celtic.

PSL players have also been called up by Botswana‚ Ghana‚ Malawi‚ Mozambique‚ Namibia and Uganda for the start of the 2017 qualifiers this weekend.
