Jaakkola eyes Cup glory

Ajax Cape Town goalkeeper Anssi Jaakkola will be in the firing line when his side tackle Mamelodi Sundowns in the Nedbank Cup final on Saturday (Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, 3pm).

But he is hoping to make up for past disappointment by helping his side to a first trophy win in eight years.

The former Finland international will also be playing the first cup final of a career that has taken him to Italy, the Czech Republic and Scotland as well.

It was while he was at Kilmarnock in Scotland that his club reached the Scottish League Cup final, but injury ruled him out of that game in which his side went on to beat Glasgow Celtic in the final in 2012.

"This is the first cup final I am playing in, so it will be special for me," Jaakkola said. "We won the cup back in Scotland but I was injured, which was really disappointing."

Jaakkola has been one of the standout keepers in a season in which he sat behind an inexperienced Ajax backline and helped the club to fifth in the league.

Some silverware would cap a superb personal campaign.

"I feel confident, I feel like I have been improving as the season has been going. I feel like a strong finish is coming. I am looking forward to the final," he said.

There is a chance that Saturday's final could be the last game for Jaakkola in an Ajax shirt as the club has yet to tell him if they will take up a one-year option on his current deal.

"It's the club's decision to say whether they will use the option or not, but I would like to stay. I like it here and so does my family," the 28-year-old said.

l Football lovers attending the final are in for an entertainment feast, sponsors Nedbank have announced.

Festivities will start when gates open at 11am, with musicians such as Zahara and Cassper Nyovest lined up to perform. There will be a Fan Zone where supporters can win prizes such as soccer kits and other memorabilia.

Tickets are on sale from Computicket, ranging from R40 to R80 for adults and R10 for children under 12.
