Mobara extends Ajax contract

Ajax Cape Town have ended a long wrangle with defender Abbubaker Mobara by persuading the 20-year-old to commit his future to the club. He has signed a new three-and-a-half-year contract.

Mobara had been in the middle of a bitter disagreement between Ajax Cape Town and the player's business manager Rob Moore over a number of issues, including a new contract for the player.

The breakdown in that relationship soured negotiations and had led to a delay in the signing of the new deal, which Ajax CEO Ari Efstathiou hints has put the player out of pocket.

"We offered him a substantial increase on his current contract in May last year following a promising maiden season with Ajax. Unfortunately, due to circumstances not in the club's control, he only accepted our offer in December," said Efstathiou.

Ajax had placed a R5-million price tag on the player's head when Gauteng clubs Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Bidvest Wits made enquiries for his services at the end of last season.

But Moore claimed his salary did not reflect this valuation or his status as one of the most promising young players in the Premier Soccer League. The youngster has also stated that a move to Gauteng does not interest him and has targeted winning a contract in Europe.

"For me this feels like the beginning of my career," Mobara was quoted saying in a statement released by the club.
