Stars looking to make history

IF PLATINUM Stars defeat SuperSport United in the final of the Telkom Knockout on Saturday, that result will catapult the modest North West province club into the position of the second most successful side in the tournament's 32-year history.

It would take Stars to three tournament wins, outright second on the all-time list, but still comfortably behind Kaizer Chiefs in first place.

While Dikwena mulls over that piece of history, both Gordon Igesund and his SuperSport side are, perhaps surprisingly, looking for a first tournament win.

Both SuperSport and Stars are appearing in their third Telkom Knockout competition finals. But while Dikwena defeated Ajax Cape Town in 2006 and Orlando Pirates last year, SuperSport have only tasted defeat.

Should Stars triumph, they will become only the second side behind Chiefs to claim back-to-back titles - a feat Amakhosi have achieved on four occasions - and would also extend to eight their run of unbeaten matches in the competition. During that time, Stars have defeated Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns twice, as well as Pirates in last year's decider.

If SuperSport win on Saturday they will become the 15th club to lift the trophy since the first final in 1982.

They are presently one of seven sides, including Moroka Swallows, to have appeared in the final and never won.
