Joy at last for Khune

EXPERIENCED: Itumeleng Khune
EXPERIENCED: Itumeleng Khune

A FEW days ago Itumeleng Khune was mourning the death of goalkeeping rival and close friend Senzo Meyiwa.

Yesterday he was celebrating the call-up of his understudy Brilliant Khuzwayo to the national team.

Khuzwayo was one of the two new goalkeepers named by Bafana Bafana coach Ephraim "Shakes" Mashaba to replace Meyiwa for the two remaining Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers this month - the other being Siyabonga Mpontshane.

Khuzwayo had been on the fringes of the first-team squad at Kaizer Chiefs, behind Khune, until an ankle injury ruled the 27-year-old out of action for the past two months.

Khune was overjoyed on hearing the news of the call- up for his recent deputy.

"He really deserves it. He has worked hard for it, he has truly earned it," Khune said following the Unite4Mandela press conference yesterday.

Having amassed 62 caps for Bafana and more than 160 appearances for Amakhosi, Khune knows what it takes to stay at the top and had some advice for Khuzwayo.

"He must now not relax. He must keep working harder. There's a place for everyone in the squad. Even those who have not made it," he said.

"I just want to urge other players that there is an opportunity, doors are open for everyone."

Asked who should take over the No1 jersey from Meyiwa, Khune would not put his head on the block.

Khune also recently had his moon boot removed, indicating that he is closer to on-field action.

He instagrammed a picture two days ago, saying: Moonboot OFF, good to be smelling the grass once again #GODisGREAT
