WITH the Currie Cup group phase at the halfway mark, the Pumas are the main story of the tournament so far, thanks to their consistent performances.

The Pumas proved their worth when they saw off Cheetahs 31-17 in Bloemfontein on Saturday. Jimmy Stonehouse's team are second on the overall standings on 18 points. They trail leaders Western Province by five points, with the Golden Lions third on 15 points. The Sharks complete the top-four spot with 14 points.

Life for the Pumas will become a little tougher in the coming weeks with three of their next five games away from home, which includes fixtures against WP and a resurgent Blue Bulls.

WP look set to finish top of the standings although they are fast losing key players. Wing Seabelo Senatla will not feature for another three weeks due to an ankle injury, while fullback Cheslin Kolbe will undergo more medical assessment on his right knee today. Kolbe stayed down for a long time during last Friday's 49-14 win over the EP Kings, and despite playing on for a few minutes he appeared to be in some discomfort.

The Bulls have hit some form in recent weeks and Saturday 36-26 win over the Lions at Loftus was a continuation of the good form they have shown in the previous two weeks. Griquas secured their first win of the season with a narrow 21-18 victory over the Sharks in Durban.
