Igesund facing tough ask at United

GORDON Igesund is expected to return to football management by signing a contract with SuperSport United today as he returns to the Premier Soccer League for the first time since taking Moroka Swallows to second place in 2012.

It is perfect timing for the 58-year-old, who completed his SA Football Association contract as Bafana Bafana manager yesterday, and has been the preferred candidate to take over from Cavin Johnson, fired last week as reported by Sowetan.

Fear of jeopardising Igesund's contract with Safa has been behind fervent denials by his agent in recent days of any contact with SuperSport.

But now instead of sitting in an office reading the newspaper all day, Igesund gets to return to the pitch where he has won league championships with four different clubs in a coaching career stretching back almost 30 years.

He will find a SuperSport side in dire need of improved fitness, as admitted by their caretaker coach Kaitano Tembo in a not-too-subtle dig at Johnson's training methods after Saturday night's 2-0 loss to leaders Kaizer Chiefs.

"If you look at our results we have conceded a lot of goals after the 60-minute mark. It might be a mental or it might be a physical issue," said the former Zimbabwe international defender brought in as caretaker for the game.

"The players are not in a condition to get past 60 minutes, we had no legs to carry out our game plan against Chiefs."

The 2-0 defeat at Soccer City means that with four losses in five games, SuperSport find themselves in the relegation places.
