Bulls' Basson set for return

AFTER the relief of claiming their first Currie Cup win of the season at the weekend, the Blue Bulls yesterday had more reason to celebrate - the return of Springbok wing Bjorn Basson from injury.

The speedy Basson, who has been out with an ankle injury, missed the Bulls' start to the Currie Cup campaign.

The 27-year-old, who in 2010 set the Currie Cup try-scoring record of 21, has been missed in the team.

In the opening two matches the side only managed to score one try in each game, but last weekend in their 30-25 win over the Eastern Province Kings they secured a bonus point for scoring four tries.

With the return of Basson, the Pretoria outfit could continue in this vein, starting with the return match against Western Province on Saturday.

Basson is likely to make his way back into the starting XV as the Bulls will be out to make amends for their 41-17 defeat to WP a fortnight ago.

While coach Frans Ludeke will be happy with the return of Basson, a number of players sat out of training still nursing knocks from the weekend's match yesterday.

Fullback Jurgen Visser is still nursing an injured toe which kept him out of last weekend's game, while Ulrich Beyers (concussion), Akona Ndungane (bruised knee), Paul Willemse (hamstring), Burger Odendaal (quad) and captain Deon Stegmann (groin) are expected to be back at training today.

Still on the injury front, coach Ludeke will be relieved after news that experienced flyhalf Jacques-Louis Potgieter may return from injury sooner than expected.

After having rung the changes for the clash against the Kings, Ludeke was pleased with the contribution of his charges who have not been regulars in the team.
