Johnson's still feeling pressure

CAVIN Johnson admits the pressure is on for him as SuperSport United coach, and that an unconvincing 1-0 Absa Premiership win against Chippa United will only go so far in relieving it.

SuperSport had to rely on a soft penalty - scored in the 25th minute by Clayton Daniels - and almost paid for missed chances and allowing a quick and clever Chippa frontline to at times embarrass their back four on Tuesday night at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

Johnson said pressure is part of being a football coach. "As long as I'm a living coach, there will never be no pressure," he said.

Earlier on Tuesday, SuperSport CEO Stan Matthews had told journalists the expectation within the club, based on past experience, was to challenge for the league and reach cup finals.

"It's disappointing we never made any cup finals last season. We qualified for the top eight, which is nice - on the last day. So the expectation this season is high," Matthews had said.

"Our start against Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 was an embarrassing performance. But last Saturday night we were great, but lost against Wits."

Matsatsantsa began with a 2-1 MTN8 defeat away to Pirates, then lost 1-0 at home to Bidvest Wits in the Premiership. Johnson knows his side need to find the consistency they lacked last season.

"Against Wits we played very, very well and lost. This week we didn't play well and won, " he said. "I thought we played well in the first half. Bennett Chenene and Thuso Phala missed sitters. That would have taken the sting out of Chippa.

"We didn't score, and only leading 1-0 gave them hope they can play around you in the final third."

Chippa's exciting forward line has been much-talked about since their promotion back to the PSL. Johnson cautioned the new boys not to get carried away with the hype.

"They're a good team. They have flaws and I think they're going to stumble into many of them if they play the type of football they want to."

Chippa assistant coach Roger Sikhakhane, on the bench while head coach Kosta Papic waits for his work permit, was not pleased with the decisions of referee Victor Gomes.

"With the penalty the ball hit our player on the back," he said.
