XHOSA rugby commentary on SuperSport, which has proved to be very popular, will live to describe another day on the pay channel.
Tweets from an employee over the weekend intimated at the pay- channel scrapping Xhosa commentary before the start of the Currie Cup, with the last matches to have Xhosa commentary being the end of the Super Rugby tournament, which concludes on August 2.
The Currie Cup premier division begins on August 8, when the Eastern Province Kings face Western Province in Port Elizabeth.
Former Free State loose-forward and South African Schools captain Kaunda Ntunja tweeted at the weekend that SuperSport intended to cut Xhosa commentary from its roster, which includes English and Afrikaans.
In a series of tweets on Sunday, he said: “I have received a lot of tweets today asking about the future of Xhosa commentary at SuperSport ... I can confirm that there be no Xhosa commentary for the Currie Cup. We were told that there is no budget for us ...
“This is very unfortunate but I have no knowledge of what will happen after 2014. I fear the worst though .. .regardless of what happens from here. I know I did a good job and I have not let anyone down. We shall wait and see.”
Times Media understands that there was a meeting on Monday to clarify the issue and the employee was said to be reprimanded for making the claims on the public social media platform.
A source within the company said they heard about the scrapping of Xhosa commentary, saying that there were issues around financing Xhosa commentary and about growing the game.
SuperSport spokesman Clinton van der Berg said the channel did not have plans to scrap the popular third commentary feed, which for what arguably rugby’’s biggest viewer ship.
“There is no change to the commentary. There was an absolute miscommunication on social media. There will be Xhosa commentary and it will be not changing,” Van der Berg said.
