SUPERSPORT United goalkeeper Ronwen Williams had a late change of plan in his German Bundesliga experience and has landed up at Hannover '96 rather than Schalke 04 as initially planned.
The Bafana Bafana back-up keeper will spend 10 days at the club in what is more of a work experience opportunity rather than a trial, officials explained yesterday.
Initial plans to train with Schalke were scuppered by the club's own late change of plans but Hannover stepped in and were happy to allow Williams to train with them.
They tweeted a picture of him at work yesterday.
It is an unusual arrangement for both parties but officials feel Williams will be motivated by the chance to see how a top team prepares and how he might possibly fit into one of the best leagues in world football.
It is not clear whether he will get a chance to play in one of their pre-season warm-up games but Hannover have begun their preparations without first-choice goalie Ron-Robert Zieler, who was part of the 23-man German World Cup-winning squad.
Hannover have four friendlies before Williams's return at the end of next week, including one against Dutch club PEC Zwolle, who held their training camp in South Africa in January.
United publicist David "Mazolman" Skosana would not confirm yesterday if Williams had turned out for The Reds.
"What I can tell you though is that Ronwen is still in Germany after he arrived there last week," Skosana told Sowetan.
"We are still waiting to be briefed by his manager Rob Moore about the latest developments."
Skosana added that their pre-season training had been going well and that they were looking forward to the new season.
"The players return from their training camp in Durban tomorrow [today] and they will compete in the Gauteng Cup on Saturday," Skosana said.
The four-team tournament will be played at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville on Saturday. Matsatsantsa take on cross-town rivals University of Pretoria at noon, after Mamelodi Sundowns face Moroka Swallows. The final is at 4pm.
