TRIBUTES are pouring in for Pete Moscardi - the legendary boxing writer who died at his home in Bryanston, north of Johannesburg, last week.

He was 74.

His wife, Margi, said his husband, who was born in England and spent some time in India, suffered from cardiac problems for several years.

She said the former amateur boxer, who later spent 10 years in the police force in England, said Moscardi's death was expected.

"But suddenly he had no pain and a very quick heart embolism [clot]. He had cardiac problems for many years and they recently got worse, so much so that he even lost his appetite over the last few days," she said.

"For those of you who shared his love of food, you'll know that it signalled a red flag. His two passions in life were boxing and food, and I am not really quite sure which came first. We'll miss him terribly."

Moscardi's close friend and veteran boxing writer, Ron Jackson, said Moscardi never pulled his punches and was not afraid to upset stakeholders.

"Pete contribute to Boxing World magazine for many years, wrote for Jeff Ellis' African Ring magazine and was also the SA correspondent for the weekly British publication, Boxing News," said Jackson.

Boxer Lovemore Ndou said Moscardi played a major role in his move to Australia in search of a better life. The former dual world champion has lived in Australia since 1995.

"Death has robbed me of a great friend, a father, a friend, a mentor and all in one. I loved him and thank him for what he did for me," he said.

Boxing South Africa acting CEO, Loyiso Mtya, said the boxing fraternity would sadly miss Moscardi's passion for the sport.

Margi said those who wish to join the family in celebrating Moscardi's life come to Fourways Memorial Park on Wednesday at 2pm.
