Mthalane gives up his IBF title

MORUTI "Baby Face" Mthalane has officially vacated his IBF flyweight title, his long-time trainer-manager Nick Durandt confirmed yesterday.

"Moruti is no longer the IBF flyweight champion. He vacated it on Monday based on the promise that was made by the KwaZulu-Natal government through promoter Thulani Magudulela to organise a fight down there that will see Mthalane earn R1-million," explained Durandt.

Mthalane was to earn R120000 for his fifth defence against Amnat Ruenroeng in Bangkok, Thailand, on January 24. The purse money was decided by the bid won by a Thai promoter last year.

Durandt also denied rumours that he and Mthalane had ended their 14-year relationship.

"Surely, I would not be talking on his behalf if that was the case. Some things happened last week, but I prefer to make you understand that we are still together and looking forward to a brighter future," said Durandt, who admitted that he was unhappy that Mthalane chose to vacate the title he won in 2009.

Mthalane announced through promoter Magudulela on Sunday that he would be in action in Kwa-Zulu-Natal either next month or in March.
