Sundowns lose out on Lakay

TARGET : Celtic's Thabo Nthethe

THE possibility of Lyle Lakay moving from Bloemfontein Celtic to Mamelodi Sundowns in the current transfer window after trials at the Brazilians in November were ended yesterday when he signed a contract extension with the Free State outfit.

But the future of Bafana Bafana and Celtic centre-back Thabo Nthethe is still up in the air as the transfer window period has about 20 days left for business.

Lakay, who joined Celtic in mid-2012 from SuperSport United, had been set for a possible switch to Sundowns where coach Pitso Mosimane sought to convert him from an attacking left-sided midfielder into a left-back to alleviate an injury crisis at the Tshwane-based club.

Lakay even made the unusual step of going to Sundowns for trials after the season had started.

But no deal has been done and the 22-year-old is to stay at Phunya SeleSele for one season longer after the club exercised an option for a one-year extension.

But it is expected there might yet be some business between the two clubs with Sundowns still keen to sign Nthethe - currently on duty with the national side at the African Nations Championship in Cape Town.

"Obviously, we want to try and keep him and he recently renewed his contact with us," said Celtic's chief executive Khumbulani Konco yesterday, admitting the Brazilians' interest was substantial.
