The future looks rosy for Elvis Moyo, says trainer

THE future looks bright for newly-crowned WBF All-Africa heavyweight champion Elvis Moyo, says his trainer Gert Strydom.

Strydom was reacting to his charge's points win over Osborne Machimana in Cape Town on Friday night.

Zimbabwean Moyo was a 100-1 underdog going into the 10 rounds title fight that was staged by promoter Steve Kalakoda.

But the underrated fighter upset the experienced former South African heavyweight champion. Moyo improved to four wins against three defeats and a draw, while Machimana suffered his eighth defeat against 18 wins and two draws.

"Elvis fought according to the plan, which was to fight a close fight through 10 rounds, and it paid off. We now have offers coming from all over," said Strydom.

"Elvis can be a great fighter. He just lacks confidence but I think this belt will turn things around for the better for him. He does realise how strong and good he is. Osborne only landed about three clean shots on Elvis.

"That is how good his defence is. I think he's got a great future - it's just a mind thing. Once he gets it right in his mind, then he will be untouchable."

Strydom said Machimana was not conditioned at all for the fight.

"He came on at 132 kilograms. He is wasted talent," said Strydom.

On the undercard, WBF All-Africa cruiserweight champion Kevin Lerena outpointed Congolese Marcel Mulumba over six rounds in the heavyweight division.

Lerena remained undefeated in nine fights with six stoppages, while Mulumba suffered his first defeat against a win.

Themba Tshicila won the vacant WBF All-Africa super featherweight belt after outpointing Zimbabwean Nkululeko Vengayi.
