Tembisa residents to pound the streets

IN AN effort to revive mass participation in sport in Ekurhuleni's biggest township, the Tembisa Athletics Club is organising a mile and 5km fun run later this month.

The New Balance Tembisa Street Mile and 5km will be held on November 30 at the Moses Molelekwa Arts Centre, next to Makhulong Stadium.

Race spokesman Donald Mathipa said the event will also promote awareness of prostate cancer.

"Although the street mile will be a serious affair, featuring some of the country's [top] middle-distance runners, we are hoping to make it a fun day of sport for all. The mile will be restricted to 1000 athletes," said Mathipa yesterday.

"We invite Tembisa people and other fitness fanatics from other areas to enter the 5km race to make it a memorable day. The main objective of the event is to identify raw talent, as well as revive sports in the township. We also hope to raise awareness about prostate cancer."

Mathipa said though they were surging ahead with the set date, the event still needs technical assistance, more so the supply of T-shirts.

Licensed athletes are invited to register for the mile on www. enteronline.co.za or at the venue a day before the race, from 9am to 7pm, or on race day from 6am. The mile events start at 10.05am for women and 10.25am for men.

The entry fees are R30 for the 5km and R15 for the mile race for junior girls and boys under 15. There will be prize money and medals for top finishers.
