BAFANA Bafana defender Thabo "Mr Cool" Nthethe has signed a further three-year contract, making him the longest-serving Bloemfontein Celtic player in the team.

This will put to rest speculation that Nthethe might have relocated to Gauteng to join Mamelodi Sundowns or Orlando Pirates.

"We are delighted Thabo has shown commitment to the club by signing a three-year extension on his contract," said Celtic chief executive officer Khumbulani Konco.

"Thabo has been one of our most loyal players, he is also a role model to the youngsters and is never in the news for wrong reasons.

"Retaining Thabo will also send a loud and clear message that we want to hold on to our senior players, despite the pressure we are getting from the so-called big guns in Gauteng."

Nthethe, who joined Celtic nine years ago from amateur side Jamaica Stars, will also qualify for a testimonial match next year.

He is joining a special list of long-serving Celtic players that includes Ernest Mtawali, George Nechironga, Ambrose Mosala, David Modise, Ishmael Mokitlane and Ronnie Malefetsane.

The 28-year-old Celtic captain is planning to end his career at Phunya Sele Sele.

"I want to thank the club management for believing in me, I'm enjoying myself at Celtic. The support we are getting has been great.

"Celtic gave me the platform to be what I'm today, hence I would like to end my soccer career here and get involved in administration or coaching afterwards, " Nthethe said.
