MANGAUNG stopped Gauteng North from winning a record fourth Spar National Netball Championship title in a row in Phokeng on Saturday.

The Free Staters beat Gauteng North 39-36 in an exciting final played at Royal Bafokeng Sports Complex.

Mangaung captain, Adel Niemand, said the victory confirmed the netball talent that existed in Free State.

"We have talent in abundance in the province and I'm not surprised by our success in this tournament," said Niemand in a post-match interview.

"We worked hard for this magnificent victory and are delighted we have ended Gauteng North's monopoly in this tournament.

"When we arrived here last weekend, nobody gave us a chance. People were tipping one of the Gauteng teams to win but it was us who eventually won. This victory will encourage youngsters in Mangaung to develop interest in netball."

In the third place play-off, Dr Kenneth Kaunda from North West defeated Eastern Cape's Nelson Mandela Bay 53-44 to take the bronze medal.

Netball South Africa president Mimi Mthethwa described the tournament as a resounding success.
