Mannetti guns for Igesund

NAMIBIA coach Ricardo Mannetti is licking his lips at the prospect of a quarterfinal clash with South Africa at the Cosafa Cup Zambia 2013 - he wants to get one over his mentor.

Mannetti won the Premier Soccer League title in the 2001-2002 season while at Cape Town side Santos, where he was coached by current Bafana Bafana boss Gordon Igesund.

The former midfielder made 37 appearances in all competitions for The People's Team that year and was a key cog in Igesund's title-winning side.

But before he can pit his skills against SA, Mannetti must plot a way past Mauritius and Seychelles in their first round pool. To advance to the quarterfinals they will need to finish top and if they do so, will take on Bafana in Kitwe on July 13.

"If we get through our group matches against Seychelles and Mauritius, we will face a big match against South Africa who will be waiting in the quarterfinals," Mannetti told reporters.

"From there, anything can happen because it will be a very emotional match, if you look at the history between Namibia and South Africa, and I'd like to get one over my ex-coach Gordon Igesund.

"He used to coach me at Santos and we won the league together so I just hope that we meet at the Cosafa Cup as coaches this time around," he said.

Mannetti was handed the reins of Namibia after Roger Palmgren quit last month, and in his first game in charge helped the side to a one-all home draw with African champions Nigeria in a World Cup qualifier.

"It was a passionate display against Nigeria and that's how I want the team to play. I want the players to have passion for the jersey and everything else should be secondary," he said.

Mannetti made almost 150 appearances for Santos in seven seasons at the club, but his best campaign was under Igesund, from whom he will no doubt draw much of his coaching knowledge.
