GHANAIAN midfielder Edwin Gyimah was named the 2012-13 SuperSport United player of the season at the club's end-of-the-season awards function in Fourways, Johannesburg, last night.

It is a great achievement for Gyimah, 22, who also played for Black Stars of Ghana, having joined Matsatsantsa last year. He was praised by United coach Gavin Hunt for helping the club qualify for the MTN8 after finishing sixth on the Absa Premiership log.

Gyimah was one of their star players in the Nedbank Cup, where United were defeated 1-0 by Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday, failing to make history by being the first team to successfully defend the trophy.

First-choice goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, who won several man-of-the-match awards this season, walked away with the players' player of the season award. In addition, he received the chairman's award. Club chairman Khulu Sibiya praised the youngster, saying "the young man was outstanding this past season".

It was the 22-year-old Williams' third major award after getting the Absa Premiership young player of the year accolade on Sunday night.

Kermit Erasmus and veteran Sibusiso Zuma were the club's joint top goalscorers with seven goals apiece, with Thabo Moloi getting the young player of the season award.
