THE Gauteng government has introduced a new category to honour sports fans at the sports awards to be held at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park on June 29.
Speaking at the launch in Parktown yesterday, MEC for sports, arts, culture and recreation Lebogang Maile said they wanted to encourage more people to support their teams.
"We want to recognise the contribution of the fans at games played in Gauteng or where teams of the province will be featured.
"We have people like Saddam Maake, Joy Chauke, Matome Machaka, Gladys Bailey and many more who are seen at soccer games regularly."
Maile has urged sports federations, clubs and community members to nominate individuals, schools and teams that performed well last year.
"We have sent nomination forms to all the federations. There will also be adverts in the media, including the Sowetan."
