SOUTH African junior middleweight champion Nkululeko "The Bulldog" Mhlongo has threatened to maul Yanga Phetani this Saturday.
Mhlongo, originally from Eshowe but now based in Thokoza under veteran trainer Jabulani Malinga, will make his first defence when he meets the challenger from Mdantsane at the University of Fort Hare's Sports Complex in Alice, Eastern Cape.
He won the title on August 6 2011 after stopping Page Tshesane in eight rounds.
"The dog is hungry," the fight-starved champion warned yesterday.
"I can't even imagine what will happen when Phetani tries to take this very meatless bone (SA title) away from me. This title has not worked for me but I have got to keep it because it's a ticket to bigger things."
Mhlongo said he felt sorry for Phetani because he would take out his frustrations on him.
This stylish fighter has a tendency to hide his right hand behind his back and throw every punch in the book with only his left hand.
He described the match between him and Phetani as a bout between tutor and pupil.
"I'm the principal. The student will get a boxing lesson that will stand him in good stead against his peers in the future," said Mhlongo, who rose through Boxing South Africa's Baby Champs programme by winning the 2008 edition.
He then gave Isaac "Angel" Hlatshwayo hell in their eight-rounder in North West on October 30 2010.
Mhlongo even dropped the former multiple world champion during that fight but suffered a controversial points loss.
It came as no surprise when Mhlongo won the national title the following year.
Nothing much is known about Phetani except that he is undefeated after seven fights and is rated No 3.
Their bout will be the main supporting fight to the national super middleweight title defence between champion Balemo Weliya and Charles Oosthuizen. These fights and four more others will be presented by Mamali Production in conjunction with Amathole District Municipality.
