Having last year gained an international foothold, this year’s Soweto derby will reach an even bigger audience with confirmation that Saturday’s match will be broadcast throughout the world.
Host broadcaster SuperSport will be making the Kaizer Chiefs-Orlando Pirates feed available to broadcasters internationally across a range of platforms, including television, internet and mobile.
The US version of ESPN3 alone is available to 83 million homes via internet, mobile, tablets, etc.
Moreover, the derby will be available in 23,5 million households throughout the Caribbean, Latin America, including Brazil, and Australia and New Zealand on ESPN broadband platforms which are accessible via internet, mobile, and tablets. The potential reach is thus 106,5 million households in the US (ESPN3), Caribbean (ESPN Play), Latin America (ESPN Play) and Australia/New Zealand (ESPN3).
“Every day we receive new requests for the feed from around the world,” explained Happy Ntshingila, CEO of SuperSport. “Whereas last year piqued their interest [overseas], I believe this year is a demonstration of their satisfaction with the event, which is a television spectacular. We pull out all stops to make it a high-quality broadcast.”
PSL Acting CEO, Cambridge Mokanyane, said: “In the last few days, we have been working closely with both Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates to prepare finer details for the Absa Premiership Soweto derby. In SuperSport, we have broadcast partners who have delivered world class quality productions to the viewers and now they will be the vehicle making this derby accessible to the rest of the world. This is a major boost for both the PSL and SuperSport and confirms the confidence the rest of the world has on these two international brands.”
Al Jazeera has also joined the PSL derby party in the Middle East and North Africa, while ESPN TV will make the match available in the UK and Republic of Ireland.
ESPN 3 (via broadband) will be available in the US and Australasia, with ESPN broadcasting the game in the Caribbean and Latin America. Fox Sports Australia will also feature the match.
Fox International will broadcast the derby across most markets in South East Asia (including Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, Hong Kong, Macau and Indonesia) and the Indian sub-continent.
Sky New Zealand will be showing it and SuperSport is still engaged in discussions with Sky Sports in the UK.
There will also be a delayed broadcast to Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Guam, Hong Kong, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Micronesia, Mongolia, Myanmar, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal and Maldives.
