Sponsor waives its naming rights for Afcon - but now they want to call it the National Stadium

First National Bank (FNB) confirmed on Thursday that it has agreed to relinquish it’s naming and signage rights to the FNB Stadium during the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) tournament, for matches and related tournament events only.

For the duration of the Afcon spectacle, the stadium — which hosted the final of the 2010 Fifa World Cup — will be known as the National Stadium.

The waiver ceases following the final match on February 10 next year, with FNB being able to exercise all its previous rights seven days thereafter.

“As a proudly South African Bank and in the spirit of the nation hosting an unforgettable Afcon tournament, FNB is delighted to have reached an amicable outcome to our recent discussions with government and the Department of Public Works,” said Bernice Samuels, FNB Chief Marketing Officer.
