UNIVERSITY of Pretoria winger Speke Manamela is using a soccer tournament to make a meaningful contribution to the education of young Modimolle, Limpopo residents.
He is funding the Speke Manamela Charity Cup from his own pocket where proceeds are used to buy uniforms and pay for the studies of needy children in the area.
It will be played at Ephraim Mohale Stadium from December 24 to 29 with 16 clubs from as far afield as Hamanskraal, Mokopane and Mookgopong taking part.
Manamela, younger brother of popular politician Buti Manamela, has also asked other Premier Soccer League players to conduct coaching clinics.
"Tlou Segolela, Happy Jele, Vincent Kobola, Ramahlwe Mphahlele, Mpho Matsi, Bongani Zungu and Lizo Mjempu will also offer motivation talk on December 29," he said.
"The tournament has generated massive interest in Modimolle. All the proceeds will be used to buy school uniforms and pay for the studies of the needy children."
Prior to joining AmaTuks, Manamela played for Orlando Pirates, Mpumalanga Black Aces, Winnerspark, PJ Stars and Soshanguve Sunshine.
Still in Limpopo, the Zama Zama Challenge is pencilled in for Giyani from December 15 to 31.
"We hope to use this tournament to unearth more David Mathebulas," said organiser Victor Hlungwane, who works for Rand Water as a water quality facilitator.
Another tournament taking place in Limpopo is the Mokumong Under-18 Soccer Cup in Tshebela, Ga-Molepo, on December 29 and 30. Eight clubs will take part in this tournament which is supported by Tlou Segolela who is donating soccer boots, balls and training bibs.
In Daveyton, Pollen Ndlanya's Festive Games will be played from December 15 to 30.
"We usually have 16 clubs participating but the request is to increase them to 20," said Ndlanya.
The draw for this tournament, which has produced the likes of Doctor Mampuru and Musa Nyatama, will take place today.
The KwaMahlobo Festive Games in Meadowlands is scheduled for the Zone 10 sports grounds from December 23 to January 6.
"We will have a draw on December 21 at Kwa Betty in Central Western Jabavu at 2pm. A total of 40 clubs will participate," said organiser Blessing Zwane.
