Seven suspected robbers were shot dead at Protea Coin cash compound west of Johannesburg on Saturday, the Hawks said.
“At around 5pm, the Hawks and the special task force confronted a group of 20 armed robbers who were about to rob a Protea Coin compound in Robertsville,” said Hawks spokesman Captain Paul Ramaloko.
“After they were cornered, they shot at the Hawks; upon retaliation seven were fatally shot. Nine were injured and hospitalised.”
Eleven vehicles and a number of firearms were confiscated.
