Knockout promises redemption

THE draw for the 2012 Telkom Knockout will take place tonight with Kaizer Chiefs seeking cup redemption in a competition they have well and truly dominated down the years.

Amakhosi's 4-1 quarterfinal humiliation in the MTN8 at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns in August was a real low for a team who have not won a trophy in two years. But if they are looking to history as an indicator of success, then the Telkom Knockout should bring them plenty of joy.

The Naturena side have competed in over half of the 30 finals of this competitions since its inception in 1982, winning 13 of their 16 visits to the decider. To put that dominance into context, the teams with the next highest number of wins in the Telkom Knockout tournament are Jomo Cosmos, Mamelodi Sundowns, Ajax Cape Town, Bidvest Wits and Umtata Bush Bucks.

Orlando Pirates finally broke their duck when they won the competition last season, beating Wits 3-1 in the final to lift the trophy for the first time in their seventh final. Having started out as the Datsun Challenge in 1982, when Arcadia Shepherds beat Highlands Park 2-0 in the decider, the competition has been a regular on the calendar in various guises - the John Player Special Knockout, Coca-Cola Cup (twice), Rothmans Cup, and since 2006 the Telkom Knockout.
