DEFEATED: Noni Tenge lost against Layla McCarter in East London yesterday

East London's Orient Theatre was stunned into silence yesterday as American boxer Layla "Amazing" McCarter stopped local heroine Noni "She Bee Stingin" Tenge in the eighth round.

The end of the fight was contrary to the standing ovation Tenge received from the home crowd at the start of the bout while McCarter got a cold reception.

As a result of the stoppage, Tenge's first loss since she turned professional in 2007, McCarter returns home as the new World Boxing Association (WBA) junior-middleweight champion.

Former WBF and IBF welterweight champion Tenge began the fight well, scoring with some good jabs followed by a straight right. But it was not as if McCarter was outclassed.

Up to the time when Tenge was put on the deck, the American was behind on points.

But referee Ferlin Marsh stopped the fight 10 seconds into the eighth round after McCarter decided matters.

Sydney Maluleke, from Benny Pailman's stable in Johannesburg, became the new SA featherweight champ when he stopped Sabelo Jubatha in the seventh.

A battle for the interim SA junior-flyweight title between two bosom friends from Mdantsane ended with Bongani Silila defeating Mfundo Gwayana.
