AmaTuks break Arrows

PREMIER Soccer League new boys University of Pretoria got their maiden top-flight win when they deservedly beat Lamontville Golden Arrows 1-0

AmaTuks, as the Tshwane side are widely known in football circles, defended for the entire second half, protecting their hard-earned goal lead in a match that had little goal-scoring chances at either end.

Five minutes before half time AmaTuks capitalised on a momentary lapse of concentration by the tall Arrows defensive duo of Ritus Krjauklis and Musa Bilankulu.

The Arrows goal was scored by Mpho Maruping in the 38th minute to silence to home supporters.

Maruping, significantly shorter than the two centre-backs, leaped highest to open the scoring with a glancing header that looped past Arrows' goalkeeper Pavels Steinbors.

AmaTuks were determined to avoid letting a chance of victory slip, like they did against Maritzburg United in the opening match a fortnight ago when they let in a late equaliser after scoring a early goal, by putting 10 men behind the ball.

Steve Barker's visitors showed great determination in closing out capable Bafana Bafana midfielder Thanduyise Khuboni, who was played in a more advance area, but was unable to craft an opening.

Arrows, on the other hand, were hoping to build on their gutsy performance against Orlando Pirates but never got any continuity in possession and chances at goal dried up. They were missing the creativity of Siyabonga Nkosi as well as the fire power of the burly Collins Mbesuma, who signed for Kaizer Chiefs and defending champions Orlando Pirates, respectively.

But the home side should have equalised early in the second half when right-back Siyanda Zwane curled a dangerous ball into the box but Boitumelo Sekgobela scooped the effort over the bar.

The visitors saw off a nervous final 15 minutes of the game with Arrows pressing for an equaliser, but Dillon Sheppard, set up by the industrious Sekgobela, wasted a close range chance one-on-one with the goalkeeper.
