BANYANA Banyana's Olympic adventure ends today against Japan, the world's third-ranked team.

Despite Banyana's failure to reach the next round, the games proved an invaluable learning experience for the team, according to coach Joseph Mkhonza.

However, Mkhonza is disappointed that they failed to deliver on their promise.

Amanda Dlamini and company were hammered 4-1 by Sweden in their opening match and went on to lose 3-0 to Canada on Sunday. Today is their last match.

"Things are not going well for us here at the Olympics. It is a known fact that we disappointed many people because we should have done better in the two opening games," said Mkhonza.

"The problem is that we conceded goals early in the game and failed to bounce back. There is no consistency - we played for 10 or 15 minutes before switching off. When we switch off, the opposition scores but we hope the approach will be a different one against the world champions (Japan). We are going all out for a win against Japan to restore our pride as nothing is impossible in life.

"We might have not qualified for the knockout stages, but we gained valuable learning experience to build a solid foundation for the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.

"One of the lessons we have learnt by participating in this tournament is that we need to defend and attack as a team at all times."

Mkhonza said there was an urgent need for the introduction of a professional women's soccer league in South Africa.

Banyana striker Noko "Beep Beep" Matlou is expected back in the starting line-up to partner Dlamini and veteran campaigner Portia "Bashin" Modise.

Even if the point-less Banyana upset the hard-running Japanese today, they will return home as they will finish with only three points.
