Zimbabwe thrash limp Proteas

THE Proteas were brought back down to earth yesterday by a 29-run defeat to Zimbabwe in the T20 triangular series at the Harare Sports Club.

A gallant all-round effort by the Zimbabweans put the hosts on top of the tournament standings after wins over Bangladesh and South Africa.

The Proteas, who had beaten Bangladesh by 39 runs on Tuesday, struggled to find their feet in yesterday's match.

The Zimbabwe total of 176 for four was set up by a brilliant opening partnership of 114 between Vusi Sibanda (58) and Hamilton Masakadza (55).

Wayne Parnell led the wicket-takers with two for 33 in three overs and Marchant de Lange and Robin Peterson took a wicket each.

SA failed to get off to a good start with the bat as they fumbled to 147 all out with four balls to spare.

Collin Ingram top-scored with 48 in South Africa's innings and his partnership of 54 with Richard Levi (40) was the only one that threatened the Zimbabwe score. The Zimbabwean attack was led by man-of-the-match Chris Mpofu (three for 20) and leg-spinner Graeme Cremer (three for 29).

South Africa's coach Gary Kirsten will want an improved performance tomorrow against Bangladesh. Zimbabwe take on Bangladesh today.
