MATTHEW Booth will hear in the coming days whether he will be offered a new contract with Ajax Cape Town.

The 35-year-old is hoping to secure a long-term deal that will allow him to bring his family to Cape Town from Johannesburg and admitted that he has also been talking to clubs in Gauteng should this not transpire.

He feels compelled to give Ajax first option on his services for the new season, but does not want to spend another 10 months away from his family. A decision will be taken at a board meeting at Ajax this week.

"I would like to stay at Ajax because I have enjoyed my time here, but I am looking for a longer-term contract from them than just one season because that then makes it worthwhile for me to bring my family down from Joburg," Booth toldSowetan.

"I spent 10 months away from them last season and that has not been easy and not something I would like to continue. Hopefully I will get good news from Ajax, but otherwise I have been speaking to some clubs in Gauteng too."

The defender says he is now injury-free after a serious knee injury had looked career-threatening.

Booth did not score a single goal in his three seasons at Mamelodi Sundowns after returning from Russia in 2009. But he managed five in the last campaign at Ajax.

  • Ajax juniors will represent South Africa at the Manchester United Under-15 Nike Premier Cup in Shanghai, China, next month.

The team, coached by former Bafana Bafana defender David Nyathi, qualified from South Africa after beating SuperSport United 2-1 in a final on Sunday.

Twenty clubs will take part in Shanghai from July 22 to 25.

On Sunday in Soweto, Ajax beat Diambars FC 2-1 to reach the final, while Matsatsantsa eliminated Bidvest Wits 4-2.

Eight teams took part in the South African leg of the international tournament. The other four teams were Izichwe FC, Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates and the School of Excellence. Orlando Pirates, who won the local tournament in 2010 and last year, lost in the group stages.

United's Zama Rambuwane was named player of the tournament, an award voted for by coaches of the participating clubs. Avuyile Mkhundlu of Sundowns and Diambars' Witness Mathebula were joint top scorers with four each.
