Assistant ref Siwela earns nomination
TOP assistant referee Zakhele Siwela is a deserving nominee for the Gauteng Sport Awards, which will take place at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park on June 30.
The Alexandra-based Siwela has been nominated in the technical official of the year award category.
The awards were introduced by Gauteng MEC for sport, arts, culture and recreation Lebogang Maile to recognise athletes and sports administrators.
"It is a well deserved nomination, Zakhele has been doing well in the PSL and globally," said former professional referee Ronnie Marhule.
Siwela is also one of the assistant referees included in the provisional panel of the 2014 Fifa World Cup finals in Brazil.
He was at the Fifa Under-17 World Cup finals in Mexico last July and officiated at the Africa Cup of Nations finals in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea earlier this year.
The other nominees in Siwela's category are Johan Cloete (cricket) and John Wright (hockey).

Disabled sportswoman of the year: Bonita Blabkenberg (motorsport), Zandile Nhlapo (athletics);
Disabled sportsman of the year: Samkelo Radebe (athletics), Pieter Smit (wrestling), Pieter du Preez (wheelchair racing);
Sport personality of the year: Lucky Lekgwathi (soccer), Marsha Marescia (hockey), Neil McKenzie (cricket);
Administrator of the year: Senzo Mazingiza (soccer, Orlando Pirates), Debbie Phillips (soccer) and Khotso Ncholo (softball).
