Oliphant on Afcon board

FORMER Safa president Molefi Oliphant has been roped in to serve on the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations Local Organising Committee board.

Oliphant was appointed as a director by Safa president Kirsten Nematandani.

Other top soccer bosses on the board include Irvin Khoza, Mandla Mazibuko, Danny Jordaan, Alpha Mchunu and Nomsa Mahlangu.

Oliphant was part of the Safa team that successfully hosted the 2010 World Cup.

Nematandani and Oliphant, a Confederation of African Football executive committee member, could not be reached for comment at the time of going to press.

Meanwhile, Cabinet will announce the five cities that will host the Afcon and four that will stage the 2014 African Nations Championships (Chan) today. Spokesman Jimmy Manyi will also announce the names of ministers who will form part of the LOC.

The five cities that will host Afcon matches are Johannesburg, Durban, Nelson Mandela Bay, Rustenburg and Mbombela.

Polokwane will host Chan matches with Cape Town, Mangaung and Kimberley.

l A Safa emergency committee resolved yesterday to appoint an independent team to investigate allegations that certain members of the federation were plotting to oust Nematandani.

The federation will also investigate the alleged "acquisition of bonuses by the Local Organising Committee board members" of the 2013 Afcon.
