TALENTED former international Papi Zothwane's career is at a crossroads as Bloemfontein Celtic remain undecided about offering him a new contract.

The midfielder, at one stage the most sought-after property on the South African soccer circuit, has seen his career falter in recent years.

He has had little game time at Celtic since moving there for the second half of the season and officials have said they are not convinced about keeping him for next season.

"A decision on all the players who are at the end of their contract will be made once the season is over," said Khumbulani Konco, the club's CEO.

Zothwane, who will be 31 in August, made his name as a playmaker at Lamontville Golden Arrows but got himself into hot water when he greedily signed two contacts - an extension at Arrows and a new deal with Kaizer Chiefs. The tug-of-war that followed left him sidelined for several months and put a dent in his career at a time when he was just beginning to peak.

The player's confidence seemed to take a knock after a disastrous game for Bafana Bafana in a 2008 Africa Nations Cup qualifier against Zambia at Newlands in Cape Town, when he was taken off after just 30 minutes. He was never the same again, even after he finally got a dream move away from Arrows to big-spending Mamelodi Sundowns in 2009.

At the Brazilians, Zothwane failed to command a first-team place.

Since moving to Celtic in January, Zothwane has been in the starting line-up once and made four appearances as a substitute, including in the weekend win over Wits where coach Clinton Larsen said he had done a good job in midfield, but was still far from peak condition.
