East Cape rugby lands new coach

THE Southern Kings have unveiled former Crusaders player Matt Sexton as the man to coach them in their debut Super Rugby season next year.

The 40-year-old former hooker, who played for Crusaders from 1996-2001 in the Super Rugby competition, will also take over as EP Kings coach, following a re-structuring of the management team.

The news was announced by current EP coach Alan Solomons who will concentrate on his position as director of rugby.

Another New Zealander, 37-year-old Brad Mooar, has been contracted as skills coach.

“I feel New Zealand and Australia lead the way in rugby skills and the cross-pollination we will get from them with our rugby will be very good for us,” said Solomons.

The former Stormers coach said the appointments had been made to alleviate the pressure on their current coaching staff: “We felt that too many people have been forced to play dual roles in our coaching structures and we believed that was just not going to work.”

He pointed out that former Springbok prop Robbie Kempson had been doubling up as the manager of the EP Academy and the provincial forwards coach, while Gareth Wright was the Academy assistant manager and the provincial kicking coach.

Sexton comes with a strong playing history and development background.

“He played for the Junior All Blacks, had over 100 games for Canterbury in the NPC (New Zealand domestic competition) and played for five years for Crusaders.

“In 2005 he became manager of the Canterbury Academy where he has done a fantastic job.”

Both coaches have been contracted until the end of 2014 and the coaching arrangement would flow from the EP Kings in this year’s Currie Cup to the 2013 Super Rugby competition.

Solomons said he felt both Sexton and Mooar would contribute a great deal to rugby in the region and their teaching skills would be spread to the EP Academy and the schools.

Both will arrive in PE on July 11, starting work on July 15.
