Soko's tourney part of bumper line-up
FORMER Safa referee Moses Soko is ploughing back into the community of Acornhoek in Mpumalanga through a development tournament.
Soko is grateful to businessman Ruel Khoza who is assisting them financially through one of his companies, Mabonakgomo Investment.
The Khozas have donated R20000 to the tournament, which will run from December 22 to 31.
"We have 32 clubs taking part in the tournament, which is played on a knockout basis. Everything is going according to plan," said Soko.
"The support we are getting from Dr Khoza and his wife is helping us grow talent in this community. We appeal to other business people to come on board.
"We also have the local Pick 'n Pay donating groceries to needy families in this area, with the emphasise on Okthula and Wite Hill."
Soko said they will also be honouring Rhulani Manzini of Premiership side Jomo Cosmos this year as part of the celebrations.
Last year, they honored Mamelodi Sundowns manager Mike Manzini who, like Rhulani, was also born and bred in the area.
l In North West, Mogopela were crowned the Oupa Maruping Soccer tournament kings in Taung at the weekend after beating Podumong 1-0 in the final.
Maruping, the former 800m athlete who is now a development coach, organised the tournament to help develop soccer in Taung.
"We are planning to make it an annual event," said Maruping.
l Registration has opened for the Kwa Mahlobo Festive Games 2011, which take place at the Meadowlands Zone 10 grounds later this month.
A total of 40 clubs will compete in this competition this year. The draw will be held at the KwaMahlobo grounds in Meadowlands on Thursday.
