De Villiers catches Saru offside

SPRINGBOK coach Peter de Villiers yesterday again confirmed that it was the end of the line for him as coach of Amabhokobhoko.

Arriving with the Springbok squad at OR Tambo International Airport, after their failed 2011 Rugby World Cup campaign, De Villiers said: "I had a four-year contract. The contract ends in December and then I don't have a job, it's as easy as that."

De Villiers said that he never said in New Zealand that he was resigning: "I said it's the end of the road".

De Villiers said he would move on: "Where doors open, I will go through."

His announcement at the weekend caught the South African Rugby Union by surprise.

One senior official, who did not want to be named, said: "He didn't tell us. He told the whole world he will be leaving. That can be a problem. He never told his employers."

Soon after the Boks had been eliminated from the Rugby World Cup, De Villiers told a news conference: "There is a time to come and a time to go. The journey for me is over."

The official was surprised that De Villiers should quit before the union could perform a review of the Springboks' World Cup campaign.

Over a thousand fans turned up to welcome the Boks back at the airport in Kempton Park yesterday afternoon, after they lost to Australia 11-9 in Sunday's quarterfinal.

Fans screamed wildly when De Villiers and senior members of the Springbok team, including captain John Smit, Victor Matfield, Schalk Burger and Jean de Villiers, arrived back.

Some fans threw roses at the players and coach. Despite their early exit, many fans said they were still proud of the Springboks.

De Villiers told the fans the team let them down but gave it their all.

He said South Africa had lost two warriors in John Smit and Victor Matfield who is retiring from international rugby.

Matfield said the team was disappointed they didn't bring the cup back.

Smit said that "to be welcomed like this makes the team feel even worse".
