Thobela makes sports day special

DINGAAN Thobela, an altruist of note, is at it again.

The celebrated former three- time world champion, who has always come to the aid of the poor, purchased boxing equipment worth R10,000 for the organisers of an amateur sporting event that will take place in Tshiawelo, next to Nkomo Village in Giyani tomorrow.

"This is my small way of ploughing back to the communities," he said yesterday.

"The intention is to uncover future world boxing champions."

Thobela and Isaac Hlatshwayo will give motivational talks. Event organiser Raymond Vukeya said respected trainer Eric Baloyi, who honed the skills of most former and current top-name fighters from Limpopo, will also be involved tomorrow.

Besides boxing, other events include a soccer tournament, field events as well as a road race. Fun begins at 6am.

"It's the first event of this nature. We are trying to promote good living through sport, with the sole purpose of discouraging the youth from getting involved in life-destroying habits such as drugs and alcohol," Vukeya said.
