Clash a matter of styles

THE long-held argument that styles make fights will be tested at Emperors Palace tomorrow night when Chris van Heerden and Kaizer Mabuza square up for the vacant IBO super welterweight title fight.

Left-hander Van Heerden, 24, is like a matador who moves from side to side and lures his opponents into a false sense of security with his lazy barbs.

He understands the concept of fighting from a distance and his superb conditioning has always enabled "The Heat" to finish smartly. Van Heerden may not be flashy but his mental toughness should not be underestimated.

Peter Smith's charge has 16 wins (10 KOs) against one defeat.

Right-hander Mabuza, 28, is a seasoned campaigner who likes to mix it from close quarters.

The "Destroyer" is a former SA, WBA Pan African and IBF Intercontinental junior welterweight champion. He held his own for six rounds before being stopped in the seventh by Zab Judah for the vacant IBF junior welterweight strap on March 15.

Mabuza, trained by Manny Fernandez, has 23 wins (14 KOs) against seven losses and two draws. Their clash will top Golden Gloves Promotions' Blockbuster bill.

Meanwhile, Filipino Michael Landero must prepare for a storm of flailing leather from Hekkie Budler when they fight for the vacant IBO strawweight title.

The cruiserweight eight-rounder between hard hitters Thabiso Mchunu and Zack Mwekassa will come down to who lands the haymaker first.

Heavyweight sensation Flo Simba should walk past Danie Venter while Sam Malinga must brace himself for war against Bongo Lipembo.

Joey Stiglingh's high work rate should see him through against Jasper Seroka.

l In Durban, Christopher Buthelezi will defend the SA junior middleweight belt against Sakhiwo Zoya in the main bout of Ludonga Promotions' bill at Kwa-Mashu Indoor Sports Centre.
