FEMALE boxing promoter Mbali "Don Queen" Zantsi says women have demanded firm ground to stand on in this male-dominated sport.

"They (the girls) will rock the world," said Zantsi, whose Showtime Boxing Promotion will stage an all-female boxing tournament at Kempton Park Civic Centre on Saturday.

The event will be co- presented by the office of the MMC of Ekurhuleni to "ensure that women take their rightful place in shaping the country".

This will be Zantsi's second tournament.

The first took place in Durban in 2007 in August, which is Women's Month, and it introduced female fighters such as Noni Tenge, Unathi Myekeni and Bomikazi Klaas to professional boxing.

MMC of Ekurhuleni Zeni Tshongweni said the fact that there was 50 percent representation of women in government enabled women to break new ground in the corporate sector as well, which was clear proof of the progress the country was making.

"It is therefore key for us as the City of Ekurhuleni to play our part in exposing the talent and skills of our women and what a better way than hosting this women's boxing event," she said.

"This event will not only showcase the kind of boxing talent that exists in the region but will also bring communities together to appreciate the role of women and begin to understand that women are equally capable of excelling in sport and other activities in which they could not participate in the previous era."

Zantsi makes a comeback after a two-year break.

"We are back with a bang and we are going to rock the boxing world and hopefully assist in bringing boxing back to its former glory," she said.

The tournament is dubbed For Us (women) By Us (women) - For Women By Women.

It will also feature female officials as referees, judges, time keepers and ring announcers.
