NEW Athletics South Africa president James Evans has been urged to ensure that all the national teams represent the demographics of the nation.

This was the message from South African Athletes spokesperson Sam Mlangeni, who congratulated Evans and deputy Motlatsi Keikabile on their election.

"We are happy to see a woman holding such a high position in our sport, especially considering that August is Women's Month in South Africa," he said.

"It is our wish to see James and the board restoring the image of ASA and the integrity of athletes, who are starving. We cannot allow a situation where athletes are forced to become beggars with administrators being the ones getting the (biggest) chunk of the ASA money.

"The board must also prioritise development. We would like to see athletics being transformed. The days of seeing lily-white teams representing South Africa are over."

Evans said: "All the teams we have sent to represent South Africa were selected on merit. We also rely on the provinces in terms of team management.

"We prioritise people sent by the provinces to the national championships when we decide on the issue of team management."
