Guess who's in town

RUDI Krol is back in town but this time as a "tourist".

This is at least how the coach who won the treble with Orlando Pirates last season sees himself today.

And it appears that he has ample time to shop around at exclusive clothing shops in the affluent northern suburbs of Johannesburg.

Sowetan bumped into him on Wednesday afternoon, window-shopping at The Mall of Rosebank. By the look of things, he was not looking for another trademark pink shirt but for shoes.

He spent time looking at some pairs of shoes displayed in the window of a leading shop at the mall.

Krol vehemently refused to talk about his future as a coach when we approached him. He became infuriated after we introduced ourselves.

"Don't talk to me about football," said a threatening Krol, "I'm here as a tourist."

Krol became even more agitated when we pressed him further: "Hey, leave me alone and I mean it."

And off he went.

The bespectacled mentor is back in the country after a short visit to the US where one of his children attends school.

Our source privy to his personal affairs told us Krol is in South Africa because another of his children is still at school in the country.

After parting ways with Pirates, the wily mentor was reported to be heading to Chloorkop to join Mamelodi Sundowns but Patrice Motsepe has since appointed his countryman Johan Neeskens to the hot seat.

Then there were reports that he was joining Ajax Cape Town to replace his compatriot Foppe de Haan, but the Urban Warriors opted for head of youth development Maarten Stekelenburg, another Dutchman, for the job.

Krol was then linked to three-time league champions SuperSport United but chairperson Khulu Sibiya decided to retain Gavin Hunt.

Meanwhile, Krol's friend and former Kaizer Chiefs and Ajax coach Muhsin Ertugral could not shed light on Krol's future when approached yesterday.

"We haven't spoken lately. I sent him a message when he was in America but he did not come back to me. We will talk," Ertugral said from Germany.

"What I know, though, is that he could not agree terms with some of the teams in Asia who wanted to have him."
