SPORT and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula will honour liberation struggle icon Andrew Mlangeni with a golf tournament in Sun City on August 21.
The fundraising tournament will form part of the SA Sports Awards, which will take place at the same venue on August 20. Mlangeni, a Rivonia triallist who served 26 years of a life sentence on Robben Island with former president Nelson Mandela, is a passionate golfer.
Along with Walter Sisulu, Govan Mbeki and others, he was charged under the Sabotage and Suppression of Communism Acts during the Rivonia Trial. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in June 1964 and was one of the few leaders to be transferred to Pollsmoor Prison in Cape Town with Mandela in the 1980s.
"Minister Mbalula will be honouring comrade Mlangeni and we have invited captains of industry to feature in this golf tournament," Mbalula's spokesperson Paena Galane said yesterday.
"Comrade Mlangeni is one of the people who contributed to the liberation of South Africa and we must honour our leaders to show that we appreciate what they have done for us."
Irvin Khoza, Kaizer Motaung, Happy Ntshingila, Imtiaz Patel, Molefi Oliphant and Zola Majavu are among those expected to take part.
Galane said: "This event will be used to raise funds for activities in North West (but) it will be a yearly tournament staged in different provinces."
